How to Start the Nonprofit of Your Dreams

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you’ve noticed a need in your community. Or maybe you’re passionate about giving back. Dreaming of ways to make our world a better place is great. Making those dreams a reality is truly inspiring.

When I first started my nonprofit, GreenTown Kids, I knew I wanted to help our environment. I also knew I wanted my kids to learn to do the same. When I realized there weren’t any local organizations doing exactly what I wanted to do, I decided to create my own. The creation of a nonprofit can be exciting and daunting at the same time. The excitement of making a difference is met with the uncertainty of figuring out all the rules and regulations. Then there are the why, how, and what have I gotten myself into questions that follow you around.

If the first step is an idea, the second step is a plan. Get something written on paper so your idea starts to become tangible. Start by answering questions like: What is the need my organization will address? What is the goal of my nonprofit? What area and demographic do I want my organization to serve? What ways will my organization work to address that need and serve the community? And importantly, what do I want to name my nonprofit?

Next, you’ll need to start thinking of who you want on your founding board of directors. Every Florida nonprofit must have a minimum of 3 board members. A board can have more but does not need to. These founding board members will likely become your first officers. You will need a President, Vice President, and Treasurer. You’ll also need either a separate Secretary, or one of the 3 directors acting as a Secretary to take notes at meetings. You’ll want to pick your initial board members carefully. People you know and trust. People with experience and knowledge to offer towards your needs and goals of the organization. And, people who have the time, enthusiasm, and dedication to help move the organization forward. Starting with 3-6 board members is a great goal. Don’t forget, every board member will get an equal vote and an equal say on the organization’s important decisions. Sometimes starting with fewer people is easiest.

Once you’ve conquered these first few steps, you’re well on your way to creating the nonprofit of your dreams. Now the legal work begins…from trademark searches, to Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, IRS tax exemption applications, and financial policies. Florida nonprofits must be set-up carefully and correctly from their inception. If any or all of this seems daunting, Palm Legal is here to assist!
